The company was founded in 1856 by Cark Hobrecker in the German city of Hamm under the name 'Hobrecker, Witte and Herbers'. In 1872 the company is listed on the stock exchange under the name 'Aktiengesellschaft Westfälischer Draht-Industrie-Verein'. Later in the company's history, Westfälische Drahtindustrie (WDI) becomes part of a German steel company, i.a. Klöckner, Krupp and Hoesch. In 1993, the company became privately owned again by Werner Pampus and thus independently became one of Europe's leading producers of steel wire rope and accessories .
