CASE: NCC increases safety with courses in safe rigging

"I work safely or not at all." That was the wording for NCC's annual Awareness Day, where Fyns Kran Udstyr supported the theme with knowledge about safe rigging and use of lifting gear.

NCC annually holds an Awareness Day, which nationwide must help to increase awareness of employees' behavior in relation to safety, regardless of department or function. It must strengthen the safety culture, as NCC's ultimate goal is that no one gets hurt on their many construction sites.

Awareness Day with local focus areas

Awareness Day takes its starting point locally and looks at the issues at the individual sites or departments.

Ulrich Matras Jensen, who is production director and safety officer at the Danish site: NCC Byggeri Øst, experienced problems with rigging and safe use of lifting gear on a local site, and therefore scourse from Fyns Kran Udstyr was a nearby safety topic to address, on Awareness Day:

"The thing about construction sites is that there are different measures that increase safety in the different places. It can be access roads, clean-up and in this case it was the piling that had to be looked at," he says.

Customized course content

Trainer and sales consultant Frank Nørlem, who is responsible for the courses, always listens and adapts the content to the customer's relevant problem, and NCC's Awareness day was no exception:

"When I received the inquiry from NCC about their Awareness Day, I was both happy and inspired. We always want to contribute to the focus on safety and improvements in busy everyday life, and here there was an opportunity to contribute to increasing safety on the huge construction site. After a close dialogue about the content that NCC wanted, we put together a program that met the needs that the complex construction case demands”.

Great commitment from the employees

In total, three presentations were held both for white-collar workers, production managers and riggers, so that everyone had the same framework of understanding for the subject. All employee groups were happy with the presentations and found them both relevant and directly useful in their everyday lives.

"I experienced great commitment and a willingness to both learn and discuss everyday challenges at all three courses. We took care of the insecurities that some employees experienced in connection with lifting, the communication during the lifting tasks and, on the whole, cleared doubts out of the way", explains Frank Nørlem.

Safe rigging in Polish

NCC has many collaborators associated with their construction cases, and one of the presentations therefore also had to take place a little differently. The carers from the square spoke exclusively Polish and the teaching in Safe Rigging therefore had to be arranged accordingly. Teacher Frank Nørlem was expertly assisted by an interpreter who translated the entire presentation, and despite a slight language delay, the important messages came through clearly – also in Polish.
